What Is The Difference Between a Manhole Cover And An Access Cover?

Not sure what kind of cover you need? Find out if you need a manhole cover or access cover in this handy guide.

The manhole cover and the access cover have different shapes, sizes and materials to adapt to the application of various man-made hole covers. However, there are some important differences between them that you should be aware of.

Although manhole covers are technically access covers, not all access covers are manhole covers. You must follow different standards, depending on where you use them.

What is a manhole cover?

The manhole cover is a movable cover, covering the opening of the man-made hole, the hole is large enough for people to pass through, that is, the manhole. For security reasons, cover can prevent unauthorized people from entering, and for security reasons, it can prevent anyone (or anything) from falling in. These types of manhole covers are usually used to safely and reliably restrict access to sewage and surface water drainage systems, and other underground rooms that require workers to enter for maintenance. They are usually made of cast iron, ductile iron, galvanized steel, concrete or a combination of the above.

Manhole covers are generally made of these sturdy and heavy materials in order to keep the manhole cover fixed during traffic and make it difficult for unauthorized persons to lift the manhole cover without proper tools.

What is an access cover?

The access cover, similar to the manhole cover, is a detachable cover placed on the man-made opening to restrict access for safety and security reasons. They are usually found on sidewalks, parking lots, driveways, and internal floors. They enable maintenance workers to quickly, easily and safely enter hidden areas such as wires, wiring, signals, pipes, drainage, heating and ventilation.

Most access covers are square or rectangular and can be hinged for frequent use, or they can be designed to use a special lift key, which can be used indoors and outdoors. The manhole cover is usually made of stainless steel, aluminum or composite materials, and its design is more beautiful than the standard manhole cover, and it is integrated with the surrounding environment. This is especially true for recessed access covers, as they can fill many different types of floors, including brick, tile, concrete, and granite, to help them truly blend in.

The main difference between manhole and access cover

The two types of covers are very similar in overall design and use-they both cover a hole dug in the ground to prevent access security, it can be a confusing manhole to cover an access point inspection room, which makes it an access cover. This determines the key difference between whether you use a manhole cover or an access cover where you use the manhole cover.

Manhole covers are often described as heavy cast/ductile iron covers, used to hide and protect access to drainage systems and other inspection rooms, and are usually used for fast (>20 miles per hour) or crowded traffic.

The access cover is usually a solid or recessed aluminum/steel (or composite) cover that provide a subtle or aesthetically pleasing finish to chambers that house utilities like electricity, signals, and cables, in areas where the traffic flow is less than 20 mph or pedestrian/landscape areas.

Ultimately, whether you call them "Access Covers" or "Manhole Covers", as long as your purchase decision is based on the correct loading specifications, you will always get the right product.
